June 14, 2010 – The CPCC will not Seek to Increase Levies on Blank Media

(Toronto) The Canadian Private Copying Collective (CPCC) will not seek to increase the levies on blank audio recording media in the 2011 Private Copying Tariff. The current levy is 29 cents on CD-Rs and MiniDiscs. Under Part VIII of the Copyright Act, the CPCC is required to propose a new tariff by March 31st the year before any new tariff can be certified. The 2011 proposal was published in the Canada Gazette on June 12th.

In place since 1999, the private copying levy provides remuneration to songwriters, music publishers, recording artists, musicians, and record companies in recognition of the fact that Canadians copy hundreds of millions of tracks of recorded music for their own private use.

The CPCC is the non-profit agency charged with collecting and distributing private copying royalties. Established in 1999, the CPCC is a collective of collectives that represent songwriters, composers, music publishers, recording artists, musicians and record companies.
